Location

The desert rose (Adenium) requires a sunny and bright location, ideally by a south-facing window. Insufficient sunlight can lead to weak growth and a lack of flowers.

Plenty of light

Nurture

Water moderately in summer and very sparingly in winter, as the plant tolerates dry conditions well and stores water in its trunk. It copes better with a lack of water than with constant waterlogging. Waterlogging causes the trunk to rot and must therefore be avoided at all costs. Fertilize during the growing season from spring to fall with a cactus or special desert rose fertilizer.

Temperature

The ideal temperature in summer is 24-35 °C. In winter, place the plant in a cool, bright location at around 15 °C for a dormant period during which it will shed many of its leaves.

Symbolism, colors & shapes

We call our desert rose Kevin, a reference to the famous Christmas movie «Home Alone.» Kevin is the black sheep of the family, who always makes us laugh and whom we all love. He is clever and surprisingly resilient - just like this succulent beauty, which stays cool even in the scorching heat and dispels any winter blues. Adenium obesum, the desert rose, is the succulent version of luck: happy vibes and prosperity included. As a «healing crystal», it is said to connect the root and crown chakras and allow your intuition to rise a little higher - a spiritual gym for the soul, so to speak. It looks like a tree, because its thick trunk is impressive and can store water. That's why the desert rose stays green in summer in its hot homeland and blooms magnificently. At home on your windowsill, it stays much smaller, loves the sun, and grows slowly - charm takes time, after all. The flowers appear from April to July in white, pink, red, and purple. Conclusion: a cool mix and perfect for anyone who likes plants with a touch of magic.

Origin

The desert rose (Adenium obesum) is native to the steppe regions of Africa and Arabia, particularly in the Sahel zone south of the Sahara to East and South Africa, as well as on the Arabian Peninsula and the island of Socotra. Hot flashes? No problem for her. It loves sun, dry soil, and feels right at home in hot, semi-arid regions. That's why it's perfect as an undemanding windowsill artist: sunny, easy to care for, and yet with a touch of the exotic. The plant stores water in its thick trunk, laughs at drought, and makes survival even in extreme times child's play. In short: a cool, dry diva for your living room.
